Sonoma County may be best known as a haven for tourists and wine fanciers, but it’s also known for its craft beers and microbreweries.

The popularity of county-brewed ales has prompted a request to Rohnert Park’s Planning Commission to set up a craft beer retail store and warehouse at 5704 Commerce Blvd.

John Fenn is the applicant, and a public hearing on his request will be held Thursday, June 21, at the commission’s meeting. Part of the request is a one-year conditional use permit. It also comes under the jurisdiction of the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Commission (ABC). Building and Planning Manager Marilyn Ponton has recommended its approval.

Most of the building will be taken up by a warehouse to store beer, but the front-third will be set up for retail sales. None of the beers will be consumed on the premises, and there won’t be any beer-tasting samples offered. No other alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages will be sold. Its mission is clearly defined.

Also on sale will be accessories such as bottle-openers, tankards and glassware, coasters, etc. Customers will be able buy beer online if they choose. Fenn also plans to start a Beer of the Month Club at his store. He calls his operation a “Niche liquor store, specializing in craft beers only.”

The location has the advantage of freeway visibility. Location is just a short walk north from Paradise Pet Resort. Redwood Lock recently moved their key shop to the same set of storefronts on Commerce Boulevard.
