Asbestos warnings

I’d appreciate it if Sonoma County government would post asbestos and lead paint warnings on buildings that the public uses, so we are warned of the hazard.

I’ve worked at the Boys and Girls Club at the firehouse on Southwest Blvd. and at Sonoma State University. Does 120 Avram contain asbestos, too? I’ve spent many hours there at different businesses.

Does every building in the county built before 1972 when asbestos use was prohibited still contain the hazard? Children, students, parents, workers, visitors should be warned.

On behalf of all the men and women from the City of Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety, we want to thank the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School district for renaming Creekside middle School to “Lawrence E. Jones Middle School.”

As many of you know, Larry Jones was affectionately called “Officer Friendly” and he served many years as School Resource Officer in Rohnert Park.

Officer Jones passed away last year and when the school board closed one of our middle schools earlier this year, they chose to honor his memory and years of dedicated service to the youth of our community by renaming the one middle school after Larry.

He was a pillar in our community not because of his position as a public safety officer, but because he cared about people and made a difference in their lives. While I never had the privilege of working with Larry, I did have a chance to meet him on several occasions and even when his health was failing, he had a bright smile and hearty handshake to welcome me to RP.

Larry was an inspirational leader young people trusted because he demonstrated care and compassion.

To some, he was a friend at a time when they were lost and felt alone and needed someone to talk with. He is a shining example to all of us in public safety that we can and do make a difference in the lives of others.

The RP community was blessed to have a public safety officer like Larry who took a special interest in our youth. It is deeply gratifying to see the community give back to Larry Jones and acknowledge what he meant to the City of Rohnert Park.

We in public safety think it is befitting to name a middle school after one of our officers who spent his career protecting and mentoring our youth.

Cluster and Village are separate

I was not horrified with the article Jud Snyder wrote on the Rohnert Park Council’s approval of the Sonoma Mountain Village project or the funding of the Sonoma Mountain Business Cluster, but they were totally complete and separate items and they are two completely different entities.

The article is filled with many mistakes and is extremely misleading. Here are the facts.

In a series of votes the Sonoma Mountain Village project was approved. Part of the actions changed the zoning of the land, part of the actions allowed the city to use form based codes, which is a first in our community and part of the actions approved the development agreement between the City and Sonoma Mountain Village.

It is true councilmembers Breeze and Callinan voted against changing the land use and allowing for form based codes but the vote was 5 to 0 to accept the development agreement between Sonoma Mountain Village and the City of Rohnert Park, in fact Amie Breeze commented what an incredible agreement it was for the city.

I could speak volumes to the benefit of this development to our community including jobs, money and development perks to the city like the new fire station, all weather sports facility and 23 acres of parks and open space but you should be able to get your hands on that information very easily.

As part of a series of actions to disburse community development money $888,000 will be given to Sonoma Mountain Business Cluster a separate nonprofit located in Sonoma Mountain Village and headed by Dr. Michael Newell.

The Business Cluster was one of several projects the city funded as part of its economic development program, which has been in the works over several years. The money will be paid in two $444,0000 payments over the next two years.

The Business Cluster develops, assists and places before venture capital groups green based and socially relevant technology start ups to be funded. A shining example of their success would be West Coast Solar Energy here in Rohnert Park, a company started in the Cluster with two people and an idea now employing 20 persons across from the Costco in 6,000 square feet of empty space. All the people employed work and live in the area creating more wealth for our community.

In November, the Cluster will play host to the North Bay Angels, the largest investment group in the North Bay. Ten companies will be put before the group and one local company will get funding.

Once again, all this taking place in Rohnert Park with incredible local benefit.

The council made a great decision. It is true the Business Incubator was started in part by a loan from Codding Enterprises but the two entities are completely separate.

I point this out so the residents and business leaders in the community can really understand what is taking place out here.

The development is the greatest thing that has come to Rohnert Park and Cotati since the University and is the best hope for Rohnert Park to recover financially. This coupled with the environmental benefits of the project make Sonoma Mountain Village worthy of the One Planet Community Status it has earned as well as the Governor’s award for best environmental project.

Jud Snyder knows all this, why he chose to not report it and instead mislead the Community is a question that should be asked.

Thank you so much for the beautiful article that you wrote on my dad (Larry Jones). I could tell that you took great care in trying to capture the event, which is evident in the story.
